Proverbs Chapter 1
April’s Fool
The reading today comes from Proverbs 1:24-33
24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
Today is April Fool’s day, a day for pranks and jokes. I like a good joke or funny story. But today’s verses are no laughing matter. It shows the way of a fool when he refuses to follow Gods Word and God’s Way. When God laughs, judgment is nigh.
For those that reject God, he will send forth His judgment. A look at other references to God laughing shows us that we do not want to be the fool for which His laughter is directed.
Psalm 2:4
He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision
Psalm 37:13
The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming.
Psalm 59:8
But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.
God has given us His Word to direct our path and show us the way. We need to read it and obey.
Psalm 119:105
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
II Timothy 3:16
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
May each of us follow His Word everyday and not be one who “refused” when God called. When God laughs, it is no laughing matter
